Sangiovese is a varietal that faithfully interprets the characteristics of the soil and climate of the Chianti Classico region. The aromas of this wine are thus born from the complex soils of Tenuta di Arceno; from the sandstone comes flowery hints of violets and from the calcareous soil emerges notes of wild berries. With small additions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to the blend, we add layers of depth and concentration that finishes with a slight hint of tobacco. Deep ruby red, wonderfully balanced, firm acids and supple tannins: you can feel the Tuscan sun in this vintage, as this wine sings in the glass.
Chianti is a dry red Italian wine produced in Tuscany associated with a squat bottle enclosed in a straw basket, called a fiasco.
Typically, the wine is made from a large amount (90% or more) of Sangiovese, a red grape that grows very well in the Chianti Classico region, and blended with small amounts of the white and/or red grapes that also grow locally—as nondescript as Canaiolo Nero to as famous as Cabernet Sauvignon.
Simple Chianti is high in acidity and has a fruit flavor similar to cherries, making it a great match with everyday foods like pasta with marinara or other red sauce, chicken cutlets, salami sandwiches (a Tuscan staple), pizza, and any of many other foods. When purchasing simple Chianti, get it as young as possible—usually the vintage will be only two or three years old. Read More...
