In 2006, Mother Nature provided us with an Indian Summer, long and warm without much rain. This provided the perfect conditions for our sugar and acidity to be in sync. As the acidity in our fruit slowly declined the sugar content slowly rose - the ideal conditions every winemaker can only wish for. The vines were extra stressed and this paid off with longer hang-time, more concentrated fruit and beautiful tannins.
Merlot is the red wine grape in France's Bordeaux region. Although still overshadowed by Cabernet Sauvignon, it has been gaining popularity especially in the United States, South America, Italy and Australia. Merlot has often been blended with other grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon which enhances the structure and flavor that Merlot lacks. Merlot is now primarily popular as a varietal wine.
Merlot-based wines usually have medium body with hints of berry, plum and currant.
